ABOUT AMIE

Amie’s Bio

Amie Brockway is a stage director, actor, playwright, teacher, and author of memoir. She has worked at McCarter Theater in Princeton, NJ, numerous off- and off-off Broadway theaters, and served for more than four decades as artistic director of The Open Eye Theater in New York City and in the Catskill Mountains, where she has directed more than one hundred new and classic plays. She has participated in new play development at the Bonderman National Youth Theater Playwriting Symposium, New Visions New Voices at the Kennedy Center, Write Now in Tempe, AZ and Indianapolis, IN, the Coterie in Kansas City, and the Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights. She served on the Board of TYA/USA and was editor of its journal TYA Today. She has taught acting for elementary and middle-school students through senior adults at The Open Eye Theater and has taught playwriting at Writers in the Mountains and The Open Eye Theater.  She is co-host of The Open Eye Theater Playtime program on WIOX radio in the Catskills.  She is a member of SAG/AFTRA, The Dramatists Guild, and Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.  She is a past co-president of The League of Professional Theatre Women.  She holds a BFA from the professional acting conservatory program at SUNY Purchase, an MFA from Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts, and completed a series of post graduate intensive workshops at Shakespeare & Company.

 AWARDS and HONORS

Nominated for the 2021 Orlin Corey Medallion Award for Artistic Excellence, American Alliance for Theatre and Education’s Sara Spencer Award 2015 for Artistic Achievement, AATE’s Presidential Citation 2013 in recognition of outstanding dedication and leadership in organizing contributions from young writers and commitment to enriching the lives of young people through the theatre arts, winner in 2006 of the prestigious Aurand Harris Grant from The Children’s Theatre Foundation of America, Berilla Kerr Award for work on new American Plays, Working Theatre Artistic Visionary Award, ASSITEJ/USA delegate to the 22nd Danish Children’s Theatre Festival in Varde in April 1992, and recipient of the 1991 Paul Green Foundation Award.
